NETWORK INTELLIGENCE // RESEARCH BRIEF

Bluesky user stats, growth & daily activity

Bluesky has 47.08M accounts on Bluesky-operated servers. This brief tracks how fast that number grows, how many accounts are active each day and how many of them post, with daily numbers since November 2022 built from Jaz’s public index and archived counts. Daily data runs through Oct 18, 2026.

User velocity

New accounts per UTC day, from end-of-day user counts (Jaz’s counter adds accounts and never subtracts deletions). The last 7 days averaged +16.1K/day; the largest day was +995.7K on Nov 14, 2024 (est.). Migration waves (February 2024, August–November 2024) show up as sharp spikes.

Daily active users (lower bound)

989.0K accounts liked, posted, followed or blocked on Oct 18, 2026: 2.10% of all accounts. The firehose can’t see people who only read, so true daily usage is higher.

Posters

532.8K accounts posted on Oct 18, 2026, a poster ratio of 53.9% of active accounts. Posting peaked at 1.48M accounts on Nov 19, 2024.

Frequently asked questions // Bluesky user stats

How many users does Bluesky have?

As of 2026-10-19 08:51 UTC, Bluesky has 47,078,881 accounts on Bluesky-operated PDS hosts, according to Jaz’s counter. The counter adds each account that is active when it first lists it and never subtracts later deletions or deactivations, so it is closer to cumulative sign-ups on Bluesky’s own servers than to active accounts. Self-hosted and third-party PDS accounts are not included. It matches Bluesky’s official year-end figures: 25.94M users on Jan 1, 2025 and 41.41M on Dec 31, 2025.

How many daily active users does Bluesky have?

At least 989.0K accounts were active on Bluesky on Oct 18, 2026: that many distinct accounts created a like, post, follow or block that UTC day. This is a lower bound, because Jaz’s index counts likes, posts, follows and blocks only, so people who only read or repost are not counted. Similarweb estimated about 3 million mobile daily active users in July 2026 (TechCrunch, Aug 11, 2026). The record is 3.12M on Nov 18, 2024.

How many people post on Bluesky each day?

532.8K accounts published at least one post (including replies and quotes) on Oct 18, 2026. That is 53.9% of daily active accounts. The record is 1.48M posters on Nov 19, 2024.

How fast is Bluesky growing?

Over the last 7 days Bluesky added an average of +16.1K/day new accounts (user velocity, as counted by Jaz). The latest day added +17.2K. The largest single day in this data is +995.7K on Nov 14, 2024 (est.); “(est.)” means that day’s user counts are interpolated, so its exact size and date are uncertain.

Where does this Bluesky data come from?

Daily activity and the current user count come from Jaz’s Bluesky index (bsky.jazco.dev/stats). User history before July 2024 comes from the Wikimedia Commons “Bluesky Registered Users” series; later history comes from hourly posts by @hourlybskyusers.bsky.social, Wayback Machine captures of Jaz’s counter, and the Krekeny and elaval archives. A GitHub Action refreshes the data twice a day.

Why are some days missing or marked as estimated?

Jaz’s indexer had collection outages, for example Aug 31 – Sep 6, 2024 and Apr 13–14, 2026. Those days are shown as gaps and left out of averages, peaks and comparisons. User counts for days without a nearby observation are interpolated and marked as estimated: hatched bars, dashed lines and a ~ in the table.

Where do the leaderboards and top posts come from?

Blocks and follows received in the last 24 hours and 7 days are counted from Bluesky’s public Jetstream firehose. Follower counts, post counts and profiles come from the Bluesky AppView (public.api.bsky.app); all-time blocks come from the Constellation link index (recorded since early 2025, so partial); the PDS host comes from each account’s DID document. Top posts are ranked by exact like counts from the AppView. Only accounts with at least 10,000 followers and no opt-out or moderation labels are named, and posts with adult or graphic-media labels are skipped. Everyone else still counts toward the totals. The share of accounts on non-Bluesky servers is our own listRepos count of every host.

Definitions & caveats

  • Total users is Jaz’s total_users: accounts on Bluesky-operated PDS hosts, counted with com.atproto.sync.listRepos. The counter adds each account that is active when it first lists it and never subtracts later deletions or deactivations. Self-hosted and third-party PDS accounts are not included. It matches Bluesky’s official year-end figures (25.94M on 2025-01-01, 41.41M on 2025-12-31). From July 2024 each day’s value is the count at 00:00 UTC the next day (read or interpolated from timestamped readings); earlier values are Wikimedia Commons once-a-day readings, treated as end of day.
  • Active accounts (own count) is our own daily count of every account on the same Bluesky-operated hosts, taken with com.atproto.sync.listRepos around 02:40 UTC. Unlike Jaz’s counter it leaves out deactivated, taken-down and deleted accounts, so it sits well below the headline total, which like Bluesky’s announced figures counts every account ever created (on 2026-10-08: 41.72M active vs 46.91M; 3.24M taken down, 0.47M deactivated, and ~1.5M deleted accounts no longer listed at all) and its day-to-day change is net growth. It is shown on the TOTAL USERS card and as the green line on the total-users chart; its history starts on 2026-10-08.
  • User velocity is new accounts per UTC day (today’s total minus yesterday’s), shown with a 7-day average. Because the counter never subtracts deleted accounts, it measures sign-ups rather than net growth. Growth % is new accounts divided by the previous day’s total. Velocity growth is the change in the 7-day average velocity, for example against the prior week or period.
  • Daily active users (DAU, lower bound) are distinct accounts that created at least one like, post, follow or block that UTC day, as seen on the public firehose by Jaz’s indexer. It is a lower bound: readers, lurkers and repost-only accounts are not counted. Similarweb estimated about 3M mobile DAU in July 2026 (TechCrunch, 2026-08-11). Bots and bridged accounts are not excluded. Counts are statistical estimates (about ±1%), recent days may still rise slightly, and today’s partial day is hidden.
  • Daily posters are distinct accounts that published at least one post, including replies and quotes, that UTC day.
  • Ratios: poster ratio = posters ÷ DAU; DAU share = DAU ÷ total users; posts per poster; likes per liker. Index totals are sums of Jaz’s daily counts since 2023-03-01, not network-wide all-time totals.
  • Leaderboards (LDR, PST): blocks and follows received are gross counts from the Jetstream firehose, so unblocks and unfollows are not subtracted. All-time blocks are recorded since early 2025 by Constellation and are partial. Gainers and losers are the net change in AppView follower counts between daily snapshots. Controversial = blocks ÷ follows received in the window, with at least 100 blocks. Posts this month counts an account’s own posts, replies included and reposts excluded (the same definition as the post total on its profile). It is a lower bound for very busy accounts, because counting stops after 10 feed pages that contain the account’s own posts (or 30 pages in all); the number is then shown with a + as a lower bound. A controversial ratio shown as ≥ means the account fell below the daily follow-list cutoff, so its follows are only known to be at most the number shown. Only accounts with at least 10,000 followers and no opt-out or moderation labels are named; adult and graphic-media posts are skipped.
  • Decentralization (DEC): accounts on non-Bluesky hosts ÷ (active accounts on Bluesky-operated hosts + active accounts on other hosts), from our own listRepos count. Hosts that did not answer are missing, so the share is a lower bound. Bridgy Fed (atproto.brid.gy) accounts are bridged from other networks.
  • Trend badges compare 7-day averages at the start and end of the selected range (1W = week over week, 1M = month over month, 1Y = year over year). COMPARE overlays the same number of calendar days immediately before the range.
  • Collection outages (shown as gaps, excluded from averages, peaks and comparisons): 2024-08-31 → 2024-09-07, 2024-09-10, 2024-10-23 (likes), 2025-04-22, 2025-05-20 (likes), 2026-04-13 → 15. Partial days are confirmed against Kuba Suder’s independent firehose counts. Block data is missing 2025-09-19 → 2025-12-19. Activity before 2023-05-01 is reconstructed and undercounted.
  • Estimated user counts (interpolated; rows are dated by the day they end): most days 2024-07-02 → 2024-11-15 (sparse archives, shaped with PLC directory creation rates), 2025-03-14 → 24 and 2026-04-13 → 24 (Jaz’s counter offline), 2026-02-23 → 27 (stale counter), short gaps in the hourly feed (2025-12-31, and 1–6 days at a time in May–August 2026), and gaps in the Commons series in 2022–23 and 2024.

Ranges & the prior period

Every range ends on the latest complete UTC day and includes its baseline day (1W is 8 daily points; YTD starts at the Dec 31 close; a migration wave starts at the close of the day before it). COMPARE overlays a dashed ochre line for the prior period: the same number of calendar days, ending where the current range starts. Point n of the prior period lines up with point n of the current one.

RangeCurrent windowPrior period

Card trend badges compare the 7-day average at the start of the range with the 7-day average at the end, so 1W reads week over week and 1Y year over year. With COMPARE on, cards also show the prior period’s average and how the current period differs.

Reading the chart readout

  • Value for the day, Δ against the previous day and the 7D average, for every series in the panel.
  • Estimated marks interpolated user counts (hatched bars, dashed lines). Collection outage marks days Jaz’s indexer missed; they are drawn as shaded gaps, not zeros.
  • Hovering one panel draws the same date’s hairline on every panel.

Studies & modes

  • 7D MA: a trailing 7-calendar-day average. Outage days are skipped (a window needs at least 4 good days), so gaps never pull the average toward zero. With MA on, daily lines turn faint and the average is drawn solid.
  • LOG: a logarithmic y-axis for USR, DAU, ACT, REC and TOT, useful when likes (millions) share a panel with blocks (hundreds of thousands). Zero and negative values cannot be drawn on a log axis.
  • NEW/DAY · GROWTH %: user velocity as accounts per day or as a percentage of the previous day’s total.
  • Migration waves: one click filters every panel to a historical wave; the chip shows the new accounts in that window (from the close of the day before it starts), computed from the data. Click it again or ✕ RESET to go back. Event labels are editorial.
  • Zoom: Ctrl + scroll or pinch to zoom, drag to pan, ⟲ to reset. PNG and CSV exports cover the visible window.

Definitions

  • Total users: accounts on Bluesky-operated PDS hosts (Jaz’s listRepos count), added when first seen active and never subtracted. Excludes self-hosted and third-party PDS accounts.
  • Active accounts (own count): our own daily listRepos count of the same hosts, excluding deactivated and taken-down accounts; its daily change is net growth.
  • User velocity: new accounts per UTC day; velocity growth is the change in its 7-day average.
  • DAU (lower bound): distinct accounts that liked, posted, followed or blocked that UTC day. Readers are invisible to the firehose, so true DAU is higher.
  • Posters: distinct accounts with at least one post that day, including replies and quotes.

Leaderboards, top posts & decentralization

  • LDR <GO>: top 25 accounts for most blocked, fastest growing (follows received), most followed, net gainers and losers, and most controversial (blocks ÷ follows). Pick a board, then a window (24H, 7D; ALL only for blocks). Each row shows followers, posts, posts this month (own posts including replies, excluding reposts; shown with a + as a lower bound when counting stopped early), last post, account age and PDS host (Bluesky-hosted or third-party). On a phone only rank, account and the board metric are shown.
  • PST <GO>: the 10 most-liked posts created on the newest complete UTC day (or the newest partial day until one exists), with exact like, repost, quote and reply counts.
  • DEC <GO>: the share of active accounts hosted on servers Bluesky does not run, split into independent PDS hosts and Bridgy Fed bridges.
  • Sources: Jetstream (blocks, follows, likes), the Bluesky AppView (profiles, counts, posts), Constellation (all-time blocks, recorded since early 2025) and our own listRepos count. 24H and 7D block and follow counts are gross: unblocks and unfollows are not subtracted.
  • Guardrails: only accounts with at least 10,000 followers and no opt-out or moderation labels are named. Posts with adult or graphic labels are skipped. Everyone else still counts toward the totals.

Data & status

  • A GitHub Action reads Jaz’s index twice a day and commits the dataset; the page reads that file. ARCHIVE means you are seeing the committed snapshot.
  • LIVE means the browser read a newer user count from @hourlybskyusers.bsky.social. Between readings the total may tick at the 7-day pace and is then marked EST, never more than 3 hours past the last reading.
  • Today’s partial UTC day is never shown. Sources and outage dates are listed under “Definitions & caveats” on the page.
