The figure is the sum over all reporting servers, so it can fall when a server leaves the count or stops reporting, and it includes accounts that were never active. FediDB crawls Mastodon-software servers on its own and counted 8.76M accounts in its reading for Oct 25, 2026 (taken 2026-10-26 09:05 UTC); the two totals are different bases and are never mixed on this page.

Posts per day come from FediDB’s running count of statuses on Mastodon-software servers: this page stores one cumulative reading per day, taken when the update runs, and shows the change between readings divided by the time between them. The latest rate is about 397.6K posts a day, from the reading stored for Oct 25, 2026. FediDB counts Mastodon software only, so its numbers are not comparable with the joinmastodon user counts.

Where does this Mastodon data come from?

Total users, monthly active users and server counts come from joinmastodon.org’s public statistics API (api.joinmastodon.org/statistics). That API only returns the most recent 30 days or so, so a GitHub Action reads it twice a day and keeps the history in this repository, which goes back to Sep 30, 2022. Posts per day and the FediDB totals come from FediDB (api.fedidb.org), read by the same Action. When the page loads, your browser also asks the statistics API for the current figure; that is what LIVE means.

Why are some days missing or flagged?

Some days have no reading in the archive. Those days are drawn as gaps and nothing is interpolated. Days where the source jumped by a step that reversed within days, or that no real event explains, are flagged: a flagged value is treated as missing and left out of averages, peaks, comparisons and ratios. Flagged days appear as shaded gaps in the charts and as “flagged” in the data table. Real surges such as the Nov 2022 Twitter wave are not flagged.

Where do the leaderboards, top posts and decentralization figures come from?

Server boards and the decentralization meter come from FediDB’s list of Mastodon servers, ranked by users. Account boards and top posts are built daily from the public directories and trending posts of the largest servers, so they are not an exhaustive list of Mastodon accounts or posts. Only public, discoverable accounts with at least 10,000 followers are named (no bots, locked, group or opted-out accounts), and a top post must be public, not marked sensitive and carry no content warning. Everyone else still counts toward the totals but is never listed.

Definitions & caveats

  • Total users is joinmastodon.org’s user_count: accounts on all servers that report to its statistics. It is not registrations: it falls when a server stops reporting or accounts are removed, and it includes accounts that never became active. Each day’s value is the figure the API gives for that UTC day.
  • Monthly active users (MAU) is active_user_count: accounts active in the trailing 30 days. Because the window rolls, a day’s change is the activity of the day that entered minus the day that left, not new activity. It is not a daily active count.
  • MAU health and net signups are the day-over-day change of MAU and of total users. Both are net: sign-ups minus deletions and servers leaving the count. MAU health is the primary view because total users also moves when servers join or leave. Growth % is the change as a share of the previous day’s value, for the metric you picked last.
  • Servers is server_count from the same API. The archive holds it only for the days the updater (or a backfill) could read it, so its history is shorter than the user counts. The server series starts on Dec 1, 2022.
  • Posts per day is a rate from FediDB’s cumulative status counter for Mastodon software. The archive keeps one reading per day, taken when the update runs (the time is not fixed), with its timestamp. A day’s figure is the change since the previous reading divided by the time between the two readings, so uneven gaps do not distort it. It is left out when a reading is missing or flagged, when the readings are less than 6 hours apart, or when the counter moved backwards.
  • Ratios: MAU ÷ total users (engagement); posts per MAU divides FediDB posts by joinmastodon MAU, two sources, so read its trend, not its level; users per server divides total users by servers. FediDB totals (servers, posts, users) cover Mastodon-software servers only and are a different base from joinmastodon’s: they are labelled and never mixed into the joinmastodon series.
  • Flagged and missing days: a flagged value is treated as missing everywhere (gap, averages, net changes, peaks, ATH, comparisons, ratios). A day without a row is also a gap; nothing is interpolated.
  • Leaderboards (LDR), top posts (PST) and decentralization (DEC): server boards use FediDB’s server list; account boards use server directories and trending posts of the largest servers and list only public, discoverable accounts with 10,000+ followers. Gainers and losers are the net change since an earlier daily snapshot, so they need history. The list is a sample of the network, not a ranking of every account.
  • Trend badges compare 7-day averages at the start and end of the selected range (1W = week over week, 1M = month over month, 1Y = year over year). COMPARE overlays the same number of calendar days immediately before the range.
  • Not available: Mastodon has no public per-day counts of likers, posters or blockers and no global account index, so this page has no daily active users, posters or block leaderboards like its Bluesky sibling.
  • Surge windows are editorial. The Nov 2022 and Jul 2023 chips show the net change in total users the data records for the window, flagged steps excluded. The Feb 2024 and Sep 2024 windows each hold a one-day step in joinmastodon’s crawler sum that was reversed later while monthly active users did not follow it: they are flagged as artifacts, not sign-ups, so their chips say FLAGGED (hover a chip for the raw figures).

Ranges & the prior period

Every range ends on the latest day in the archive and includes its baseline day (1W is 8 daily points; YTD starts at the Dec 31 close; a surge window starts at the close of the day before it). COMPARE overlays a dashed ochre line for the prior period: the same number of calendar days, ending where the current range starts. Point n of the prior period lines up with point n of the current one.

Card trend badges compare the 7-day average at the start of the range with the 7-day average at the end, so 1W reads week over week and 1Y year over year. With COMPARE on, cards also show the prior period’s average and how the current period differs.

Reading the chart readout

  • Value for the day, Δ against the previous day and the 7D average, for the series in the panel.
  • FLAGGED marks a reading treated as missing: it is drawn as a shaded gap, not a zero, and left out of averages, peaks and comparisons. A faint shade with no hint means the archive has no row for that day.
  • Hovering one panel draws the same date’s hairline on every panel.

Studies & modes

  • 7D MA: a trailing 7-calendar-day average. Missing and flagged days are skipped (a window needs at least 4 good days), so gaps never pull the average toward zero. With MA on, daily lines turn faint and the average is drawn solid.
  • LOG: a logarithmic y-axis for MAU, SRV, REC and TOT. The velocity panel stays linear because net changes can be negative.
  • MAU HEALTH · SIGNUPS · GROWTH % (USR): the net daily change of monthly active users, the net daily change of total users, or the percentage growth of whichever of the two you picked last.
  • SERVERS · USERS/SERVER (SRV) and MAU/TOTAL · POSTS/MAU · USERS/SERVER (RAT) switch what those panels plot.
  • Surge windows: one click filters every panel to a historical window and shows signups; the chip shows the net change in total users the data records there, flagged steps excluded. Click it again, press ✕ RESET or pick any range to return to your previous view. The labels are editorial. The two 2024 windows are flagged crawler steps, not sign-ups: open them to see the shaded gaps.

  • Total users: accounts on all servers that report to joinmastodon.org’s statistics. Net, not registrations: it can fall when servers leave or accounts are removed.

Leaderboards, top posts & decentralization

  • LDR <GO>: top 25 servers (largest, most active, gainers and losers) or accounts (most followed, gainers and losers, most active). Pick SERVERS or ACCOUNTS, then a board and a window (24H, 7D). Gainers and losers are net changes since an earlier daily snapshot and stay empty until two snapshots that far apart exist. An account row shows followers, posts, last post, account age and its server.
  • PST <GO>: the 10 most-favourited posts among the trending candidates of the scanned servers, created on the reported UTC day, with favourites, boosts and replies. These are trending candidates, not all posts.
  • DEC <GO>: how concentrated Mastodon users are: the share held by the largest server, the top 5 and the top 10, and how many servers hold half of all users. Base: FediDB, Mastodon servers.
  • Sources: FediDB (server list and totals) and each server’s public Mastodon API (directories and trending posts). The account list is not exhaustive: accounts are found through server directories and trending posts.
  • Guardrails: only public, discoverable accounts with at least 10,000 followers are named; bots, locked, group, opted-out and moved accounts are left out. A top post must be public, not sensitive and without a content warning. Everyone else still counts toward the totals.

Data & status

  • A GitHub Action reads joinmastodon.org’s statistics and FediDB twice a day and commits the dataset; the page reads that file. ARCHIVE means you are seeing the committed snapshot.
  • LIVE means your browser read a newer figure from api.joinmastodon.org/statistics. It is the newest day the API has complete numbers for (it can be the UTC day in progress) and shows on the total users card and the ticker; the charts keep using the archive’s end-of-day values.
